understanding adolescent mental health: online talk + preview

This is an online event.

Sep 22, 2021 - Oct 13, 2021
16:30 - 18:00

Date Listed: August 24, 2021 (about 2 months ago)

Many mental health issues emerge in late childhood and early adolescence. Poor mental health can have a negative impact on adolescents’ physical health and overall development. Adolescents who experience mental health issues may face challenges such as academic difficulties, poor interpersonal relationships, low self-esteem and maladaptive substance use. However, early detection and treatment can prevent the deterioration of the mental health condition.

Join us as we look into the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adolescents, and ways we can provide initial support.

The talk will be followed by previews of selected TSPP courses.

Our Course Previews are non-obligatory information sessions for prospective students to learn about the various programmes offered at The School of Positive Psychology. We would love to help you jumpstart a meaningful career!

What is the online course preview about?

This is an opportunity for anyone interested in our psychotherapy and counselling programmes to learn more about the course structure, career pathways and entry requirements.

After a presentation by our consultant, there will be a Q&A session for attendees to clarify any queries as well as learn more about admissions procedures.

About the Speaker: Lim Shen Yong

    • Master of Social Work, National University of Singapore
    • Certificate in Sandplay Therapy and Symbol Work, Expressive Therapies Institute of Australia
    • Certificate in Child-Centred Play Therapy, Play Therapy Australia

Awarded as the Promising Social Worker in 2019, Lim Shen Yong utilises play therapy to support youths to work on their issues and facilitate growth. In the past 9 years, he has worked extensively with both the youths and their families on various issues such as school refusal, substance use, mobile gaming, underage smoking and youth sexuality.

Shen Yong firmly believes that adopting different play techniques is key in engaging youths who are less verbal to express their thoughts and feelings, and it helps facilitate conversation to achieve healing and realisation.

Besides helping clients through play therapy, Shen Yong loves to cycle and is an avid gardener, having gained plenty of realisations and awareness through gardening.
